An Indian's Prayer - Election 2014

Narendra Modi has been elected to parliament from Vadodara and the holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. In his maiden address as PM-elect and as he has throughout his campaign, Mr Modi has promised to restart the economy and deliver efficient governance stating that "development for all" would be his mission, "I want to tell my fellow Indians that in letter and spirit I will take all Indians with me".
So what does the populace think of the recent elections and its outcome?

Nima Srinivasan shapes her reactions into a poem!

Democratically Speaking

We Indians are a unique lot! Cricket is a religion. Bollywood and saas- bahu dramas bring emotions so strong, that one would think we are a part of the plot. And parliamentary elections, bring out the roar, emotions and tears.
The largest democracy in the world is a power to behold. Our media holds the power horses responsible and is strong enough to sway public opinion, as they did in favour of Modi and Kejriwal. The 2014 result is the aam aadmi's verdict and we have to accept it if we profess we are democratic in every sense.

In Memoriam - Jallianwalla Bagh or Ground Zero

One of the things that struck me when I went to Jallianwala bagh was how amateurish the treatment of the site was. I had seen Richard Attenborough's visualization of how it happened and as someone who thrives on audio-visual treatment, I could feel it happen again as I was there. However, that was only if I closed my eyes.

What is so scary about girls reading books?

What’s So Scary About Smart Girls?

Extrmists target educated girls, their worst nightmare. Why are fanatics so terrified of girls’ education? Because there’s no force more powerful to transform a society. The greatest threat to extremism isn’t drones firing missiles, but girls reading books.

So why does girls’ education matter so much? First, because it changes demography. Simply put, the more educated the girl, the less children she will have and that leads to stability in a nation.

Participating in the Dance of Democracy- As a Polling Agent

I never thought of myself as actually joining a political party. I belonged to the outraged masses, armchair critics all whose conversations often begin with,”Can you believe this?” How can they do this? How can they NOT do this?!’- ‘they’ alluding to that invisible force which was responsible for smoothing out our lives, for effective governance -the ever smiling Indian politician. Who is usually associated with a complete lack of outrage or urgency.. All furious questions are fielded with a Buddha like calm-everything is under control,it shall be done ,it takes time.
