The Lowly Backstabber

In July 2012, I had a stroke in Bangalore. I was nearly 60 years old. Quite suddenly, three clots presented in my right brain stem, leading to hemiplegia of the left side and paralysis in my leg and arm . But it’s the recovery process I want to talk about. While neurologists handle the medical recovery, the physical recovery needs a very close “jugalbandhi” between the physio therapist and the patient.

*Jugalbandhi is a musical term in Indian classical music, when musicians blend their individual styles to play in synergy.

Human, Heal Thyself

The human body is a complex tapestry of different energies. Our body contains kinetic, potential, electrical and other subtler energies. Currently medical science has devices that can calculate the electrical currents in our hearts and brains in order to diagnose problems in these organs.

But what of the other subtler energies?

Mental Illness & Traditional Cultures

As society realizes mental illness is no myth, the fear and stigma against those with mental health problems is dissipating, making the healing process for patients much easier and quicker.  However, there are still some cultures and traditions that believe mental illness is embarrassing and something to hide.

Embrace you Therapy: Mental Health 201

Therapy is possibly one of the best inventions of mankind. It is cathartic, it gives you perspective, and it is very good for you if you need it.

The GM Diet - Pros & Cons

Almost everyone who wants to lose weight has heard of General Motors Diet, commonly called the GM diet.  It was originally developed for employees and dependents of General Motors, Inc. and was intended for their exclusive use in the 1980s.  The intention of this program was to help employees be more aware of wellness and fitness.   After all, healthy employees make a healthy company!

Depression: The Darkness Within

Making the time to learn about mental health issues is much harder than posting an "RIP" message on Facebook. People who suffer from illnesses like clinical depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disease often suffer in silence and "put on a happy face" until they can no longer bear the pain or sustain the effort. Robin Wiliams' recent suicide is a case in point. Please, take the time to learn about these diseases. They can, and often do, kill.

I am a depressive.

The Salty Truth 2

Keep a food diary or log for a week.  List what you eat and note your salt consumption. Read food labels of sodium content; the amount listed is usually per serving size.

This will help you identify your main sources of sodium and daily consumption of it.

The Salty Truth

Salt , especially lowly table salt, is one of the most misunderstood foods. For many years now we’ve blamed salt for causing cardiovascular diseases - high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. But even as health conscious humans avoid the lure of table salt, the real culprit sneaks past, entering our foodchain, disrupting our diets, damaging our health, because many of us fail to recognize that the actual troublemaker - the added salt in processed foods we love to consume!

But first, a look at the facts.
