Outside the Icelandic Air Hotel is a large unwieldy rock--- brown and pock-marked, covered with moss and lichen. The road winds awkwardly, illogically, around it. A sign next to the rock states that it is the residence of the ‘Little People of Iceland’---- elves and fairies-----and cannot be disturbed; whenever anyone has attempted to move it, bad things have happened.
I happened to pass through Gulbai Tekra in Amdabad (Ahemdabad), during my recent trip to India, and realized Ganesh Chaturthi was around the corner. I remembered always seeing these beautiful Ganesh idols being crafted every year, in this large slum area, starting about 2 months before the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. I told my daughter that this slum is known as Hollywood, not knowing why. My daughter curiously googled this area and to our amusement found that Google maps also lists it as “Hollywood basti”!
Around 5 years ago, the walls in our cities were covered only with random posters, paan stains, and trails of urine. But that’s changed. Today, you will see art squashed between posters, stains and hawkers; fighting for their space in the sunshine. Ever heard of a vodka and snake blood drink? Yes, it’s available in Vietnam. Or fermented horse milk with spit in it? No, that’s in Mongolia. I haven’t been to either of these countries but I’m harbouring a wealth of information in my head about places that I am yet to visit. Some of it bizarre, most of it useful but all of it comes from one source - TTOT.
I have to admit it, I cannot lie. I visited Chennai every summer when I was in school and recently lived there for two whole years but I didn’t know all these things about Chennai. When I visited last week, I decided to act like a tourist and comb the streets for facts, fiction and stories that quenched my thirst..... and wow, what a find!
I dare you, each of you Chennaivasis, to see how many of these points below you knew.
Swasti Prapta Ring Bali ( Welcome to Bali)!!!!!!
Bali conjures up an image created by Elizabeth Gilbert in " Eat, Pray, Love", as an island of rice fields and hip beach parties. Thanks to the book and the movie made subsequently, it is now known world over as an island where you rediscover yourself and find love.
We didn't need to rediscover ourselves or find love when we decided on Bali as our family holiday destination this year. Our agenda was totally different!! The keyword was FAMILY !!!!!
I love Varanasi. And at the same time, I hate Varanasi! Read no further, if you cannot understand this emotion… if you think you feel the same, continue.
