The relationship between dance and music is akin to the relationship between sound and sight. The potential link between dance (kinetic rhythm) and music (auditory rhythm) heighten the emotional experience. Both posit the foundation of harmony, balance and rhythm. The solo artist while performing various items of the margam reacts to the various elements of music like sollus (bol-s of dance), swara-s or notes, sahitya or lyrics, tala or rhythm and laya. Our sastras speak of anahata nada or imperceptible sound as the cosmic sound of the Absolute.
The Chennai dance and music festival is a celebration of classical dance and music held from early December to mid January in Chennai, the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu. The festival had its origin in the Margazhi Festival of Dance and Music in 1927 at the Madras (which was the city’s name until 1997) Music Academy. The city comes alive with the festival that has now grown into a cultural extravaganza with more than 2000 performances held at a number of venues in the city.
The Natyashastra, a centuries old treatise on Indian dance, drama, music and theatre, defines the qualities of a good dancer in specific terms. Artistic competence is part inherent and part acquired.
The Natyashastra says that for a dancer to blossom she is required to have as her inherent qualities, natural beauty of face and body, a feel for music and talam or rhythm, a good voice, intelligence, enthusiasm, patience, humility, steadiness of mind, confidence, devotion, perseverance, concentration, etc.
Secularism is a philosophy which holds the view that religious considerations should not influence civil, social or political life. In India, the word secular was added to the preamble of the Indian constitution by the 42nd Amendment (1976), mandating religious equality, tolerance and respect among all Indian religions.
The dancer Vidhya Subramanian, a disciple of Guru S.K.Rajarathnam and Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan is acclaimed for her sensitive choreography and emotionally charged performances. She has been awarded the titles of 'Singar Mani', 'Natya Arasi', 'Yuva Kala Bharati', and 'Nadanamamani'. In her charismatic artistry one witnesses a strong belief in the validity of choreographic structure combined with openness to new influences. She is founder and artistic director of Lasya Dance Company and holds an MA in Theatre Arts. Lasya, which means 'graceful dancing' has staged critically acclaimed productions that interpret traditional, spiritual, modern and collaborative themes.
