While I applaud Jennifer for speaking out and acknowledging her lack of negotiating skills, I question the negotiating skills of her agent?.Why does the agencies representing these actors not advice them appropriately? They probably know what the male actors are making. Why have they not been fired?
The actress Jennifer Lawrence spoke out against gender pay inequality in an essay on Tuesday, describing how she felt when leaked documents exposed by the Sony Pictures hack showed that she had been paid less than her male colleagues on the film “American Hustle.”
NPR ran an interview with astronomer and Cal Tech professor Shrinivas Kulkarni yesterday, and overall it's relatively mild. But less than two minutes in, Kulkarni manages to say something dumb: "Many scientists, I think, secretly are what I call 'boys with toys'." It's one of those quotes that makes you cringe and roll your eyes simultaneously. Even NPR's Joe Palca cautiously repeats the phrase back to Kulkarni. Twice. "Boys with toys," he muses, "Boys with toys."
It shows that the key to increasing the number of female engineers may not just be mentorship programs or child care centers, although those are important. It may be about reframing the goals of engineering research and curriculums to be more relevant to societal needs. It is not just about gender equity — it is about doing better engineering for us all.
